Dear readers,
Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by the Centre for Science and Environment’s Climate Change programme and Down to Earth.
As global discussions on the energy transition and fossil fuel phase-out gain momentum, Senegal has become the fourth country to sign the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JET-P) deal with a consortium of developed countries comprising France, Germany, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The aim is to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy, increasing Senegal's share to 40% of its electricity mix by 2030. Parth Kumar of CSE’s Industrial Pollution Unit writes that while the partnership promises 2.5 billion euros in financing, it is yet to be seen if this will be in the form of loans, which might worsen Senegal’s debt crisis – or in the form of grants. Additionally, questions arise about the emphasis on natural gas as a bridge fuel, potentially serving Europe's interests. After all, new gas reserves have been discovered in Senegal in recent years.
A new study finds that domestic violence will rise as temperatures across the Indian subcontinent.
CSE's Avantika Goswami and Ananya Rao write their conclusions on the Summit for New Global Financing Pact held in Paris last month, where developed countries fail to address the demands of the Global South. Incremental solutions and derisking private capital dominate, ignoring urgent financial needs and the responsibility of developed nations.
A new report by CSE reveals that only 5% of India's coal-based thermal power capacity meets SO2 emissions norms.
And the Marshall Islands have been fighting for decarbonizing global shipping and achieving an equitable energy transition to protect vulnerable island states.
Finally, don’t miss out on the webinar by CSE's Renewable Energy Programme that discusses the challenges of clean cooking adoption in India.
