Dear readers,

Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by the Centre for Science and Environment’s Climate Change programme and Down to Earth.

Sunita Narain, CSE's Director General, reflects on 76 years of Indian environmentalism. She discusses its impact, from pivotal moments to current challenges in balancing rights, protection, and progress.

This week, we are focusing on the alarming surge in wildfire incidents, shedding light on the devastating recent events in Hawaii. The historic city of Lahaina fell victim to ferocious flames, leaving destruction in their wake. It has also left many of Lahaina’s roughly 13,000 residents homeless. Meanwhile, logistical challenges have slowed down the government’s relief and rescue efforts. Experts have linked human-related factors, climate change, and the winds of Hurricane Dora to this disaster. The Hawaii archipelago faces heightened flash droughts, driven by reduced rainfall and higher temperatures. This leads to an increased wildfire risk due to rapid moisture depletion and dryness in the surface fuel load.

On the other hand, in Himachal Pradesh, relentless rains triggered landslides causing casualties, severe property and infrastructure damage.

The Indian monsoon season has been on a continuous break for the past 11 days, attributed to the developing El Nino and shifting monsoon trough. India's vital farming belt grapples with water shortage, impacting crops. This comes when the government has banned rice export amidst an uncertain Kharif outlook.

And youth climate advocates in the state of Montana, USA, sued their state over climate change and emerged victorious, from a first-of-its-kind climate trial.
