Dear Readers,

Greetings from the Centre for Science and Environment! CSE’s Renewable Energy team is pleased to bring to you the latest issue of our Energy Transitions newsletter.

This year at the annual Conference of Parties (CoP 28), it is expected that, for the first time, the Green Fund’s yearly $100 billion target will be reached and that a Loss and Damage Fund will be set up, setting priority to adaptation.

The rise in battery demand drives the need for critical materials. In 2022, globally, about 60% of lithium, 30% of cobalt, and 10% of nickel demand were for EV batteries. In 2017, the shares of these minerals were around 15%, 10%, and 2%, respectively. The mining and processing of these critical minerals have to increase rapidly to support the energy transition and to keep up with the drive for clean energy technologies. On the other hand, lowering the need for critical materials will be necessary for improving the supply chain’s sustainability, resilience, and security. Better innovations can provide benefits, such as advanced battery storage technologies necessitating low quantities of critical minerals and measures to aid the adoption of transport models with optimized battery size and the subsequent development of battery recycling.

The National Seminar on the “Promotion of Clean Energy Access in Northeast India”, held in Shillong on June 23, focused on enhancing energy access through clean energy sources. The event was organized by CSE, with support from the Association of Renewable Energy Agencies of States under the aegis of the MNRE and was hosted by Meghalaya New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (MNREDA). With a low electricity footprint per capita of less than 500 kWh annually in the region, decentralized RE offers a way to support the grid in the Northeast, though addressing its challenges is a big dilemma.

DECARBONIZING TRANSPORT: HOW BIG IS THE PROBLEM?
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), transport accounts for around a quarter of the world's CO2 emissions. The most promising projections account for only reductions in road transport, leaving the shipping and aviation sectors to contribute over 27% of transport emissions, up from around 22% currently. The shipping & aviation sectors are ripe for new innovations that’ll quickly and economically reduce emissions for them.
