India can generate 12GW power from tidal energy |
Tidal energy has potential in the country and with support from policy makers, it is headed for better times, Abdus Samad, Professor at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Board member and mentor of Virya Paramita Energy Pvt Ltd, tells Sapna Gopal
What, according to you, is the potential of ocean energy in India?
Ocean energy, also known as marine energy or ocean power, refers to the power generated from oceans, waves and tides. India is a peninsular country, having a coastal length of more than 7,500 km and has the potential to generate 40 GW of power from ocean waves, and an additional 12 GW from tidal energy. The other form of energy is ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) and its potential is 180GW.

CEA proposes to notify Draft CEA Regulations 2023 |
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) proposes to notify the #Draft Central Electricity Authority (Construction of Electric Lines in #GreatIndianBustard Area) Regulations, 2023.
Laying of electric lines through GIB area-
(1) Electric lines of 33 kV and below voltage level passing through Great Indian Bustard area shall be underground cable.
(2) Electric lines of above 33 kV voltage level passing through Great Indian Bustard area shall be overhead lines installed with bird flight diverters. READ MORE |

RE Minister chairs meet with state power utilities |
The Review Planning & Monitoring (RPM) meeting with states and state power utilities was held on January 23rd and 24th in New Delhi, under the chairmanship of Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy R.K. Singh, in the presence of Krishan Pal, Minister of State for Power and Secretary (Power). R.K.Singh appreciated the efforts made by all the stakeholders in addressing AT&C loss in the country which has resulted in overall reduction of AT&C losses by 5% in FY 2021-22.

Seminar on ‘Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage’ |
NTPC ltd, India’s largest integrated Power utility, hosted an international seminar on ‘Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS)’ at the First Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) meeting under the aegis of G20 India presidency at Bengaluru. During the event, more than 200 dignitaries, speakers, panellist and delegates of various countries participated in the seminar wherein they shared their knowledge and learnings pertaining to CCUS. A report on “Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) - Technology Gaps and International Collaboration”, which was commissioned under G20 India Presidency, was unveiled during the event. G20 countries agree on efforts to achieve energy efficiency |
The G20 member countries participating in the first Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting in Bengaluru agreed on collective efforts in priority areas to achieve energy security and diversified supply chains of new energy sources. Briefing media on the deliberations of the first ETWG meeting on February 5, Alok Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Power, said that technical sessions held on Energy Transition through Addressing Technology Gaps; Low-cost Financing for Energy Transition; Energy Security and Diversified Supply Chains; Energy Efficiency, Industrial Low Carbon Transitions and Responsible Consumption and Fuels for Future had evoked a very good response from all the member countries. Initiatives to incentivise investment by private sector in RE sector |
The government has taken the following measures to incentivise investment by private sector in the field of renewable energy including solar energy in India. They include permitting Foreign Direct Investment up to 100% under the automatic route, waiver of inter-state transmission system charges for inter-state sale of solar and wind power for projects to be commissioned by June 30th, 2025, declaration of trajectory for Renewable Purchase Obligation up to the year 2029-30, amongst others. Measures to promote new waste to energy plants |
As on January 30, 2023, 90 waste to energy projects under the Waste to Energy (WTE) Programme of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) are under various stages of implementation. These include 7 Biogas Generation plants with a cumulative production capacity of about 83400 m3/day; 34 BioCNG Generation plants with a cumulative production capacity of about 248000 kgs/day; and 49 Power generation plants with a cumulative production capacity of about 330 MW. MNRE is implementing Waste to Energy (WTE) Programme under the umbrella of National Bioenergy Programme. READ MORE |

A conference, 'Powering Cities in the Global South', held in October 2022, aimed at addressing the crucial issue of energy generation and utilization in smart cities, particularly in India. The conference was hosted by the Nansen Environmental Research Centre - India (NERCI), Kochi and conducted within the framework of the "URban Sustainability in Action Multi-disciplinary Approach through Jointly Organized Research schools" (URSA MAJOR) project, coordinated by the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) and funded by the Research Council of Norway.
