Dear Readers,

Greetings from the Centre for Science and Environment! CSE’s Renewable Energy team is pleased to bring to you the latest issue of our Energy Transitions newsletter.

India has seen unprecedented growth in RE capacity addition and adoption of cleaner technologies in the past couple of years. With this has come unique challenges that are new territory for India’s policy makers. But our policy makers have risen up to the challenge and have been coming out with relevant policies or making additional amendments to existing ones. Only in the last 2 weeks, 3 new policies have been announced in the RE sector, some of which are covered in our CSE Writes and News section below.

CSE too has been charting new waters in the past two weeks. Our Climate team recently attended the Bonn Climate Conference and CSE’s Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) team was invited to be part of the global negotiations committee (the INC-2) in Paris. We bring you news and updates from both these international conferences.

There is also some news brewing around new carbon sequestration technology. A company in Iceland has been successfully capturing CO2 from the air and converting it into solid rock for the past two years. This brings hope for the future of CCUS, a technology which cannot be completely ignored if we are to keep temperatures below 1.5 deg C in the future. We need both decarbonization of polluting sectors as well as scaling up of carbon capture technology to avoid more extreme weather events in the future.

Please do go through our publications, web articles and upcoming trainings. We hope you find these insightful and help you understand a bit more about the fast-changing renewable energy sector in India. We also welcome your feedback – please feel free to comment or point out a news tip we might have missed.
