Dear readers,

Wayanad district in the southern Indian state of Kerala saw catastrophic landslides on 30th July, 2024. The series of landslides, caused by excessive rainfall claimed over 400 lives with several people still missing. Climate scientists recently provided a significant insight into the disaster – the rainfall that caused the landslides was made 11% worse due to global warming. DTE’s Akshit Sangomla wrote about the World Weather Attribution (WWA) study that put forward this finding. WWA is a group of climate scientists who put forth analysis and use climate models to understand the role of global warming in the occurrence, frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Quantifying such information is crucial to advance sufficient climate action – without evidence linking climate change to disasters, the chances of relevant actors responding in a timely manner is low. WWA acknowledges that given the complex weather ecosystem of the mountains where the landslides occurred, concluding that planetary warming played a role can be challenging. Still, the study noted that increased heavy one-day rainfall events due to a warming world are expected in the years to come.

In other news, CSE’s Industrial Pollution Unit released a new report on India’s upcoming domestic compliance carbon market. The role of carbon markets in effectively aiding countries to meet their climate commitments is increasingly being debated these days. The report presents lessons that can be learned from existing emissions trading schemes and compliance carbon markets around the world.

Lastly, registrations are now open for CSE’s three-day residential training programme on ‘Solarising India’s Agriculture’ to bridge knowledge gaps and facilitate capacity building.
