Dear readers,
Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by CSE’s Climate Change programme, and Down to Earth (DTE).
Food inflation due to climate change has seen a rapid increase in recent years. According to the Reserve Bank of India, climate change is impacting the production of food and agriculture in the country, which in turn is causing sharp rise in food prices. DTE’s Managing Editor, Richard Mahapatra highlights that between 2016 and 2020 average food inflation was 2.9%, but that in the 2020s, this has more than doubled to an average 6.3%. A ‘highly skewed’ distribution of monsoon coupled with erratic extreme weather events has led to disruption of agricultural cycles, the impacts of which include loss of income for small and marginalized farmers, as well as poorer nutrition due to restricted diet intake among lower income households.
Meanwhile, a new study has revealed that dangerous levels of toxic mercury are being released into the environment as the ice in the Arctic melts due to global warming. As CSE’s Susan Chacko writes, experiments by authors of the study conducted in the Yukon River basin of Alaska have had telling results. While larger amounts of mercury is ‘liberated’ from permafrost during glacial erosion, lesser portions of it are ‘redeposited’ by migrating rivers, the study found. Mercury is a known toxin with adverse health implications for humans and other biodiversity. Indigenous communities living in the Arctic region are among the most exposed to the contaminant at present.
Finally, CSE and DTE’s flagship ‘State of Africa’s Environment 2024’ report is due to be released on 16th September. This theme of the year is water. Journalists interested in covering the report launch can register now.
