Dear readers,

Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by CSE’s Climate Change programme and Down to Earth (DTE) magazine.

Hundreds of lives have been lost in Nepal due to the recent flooding, landslides and heavy torrential rains. Experts have identified a stronger than usual monsoon as the cause, adding that climate change is increasing the severity and frequency of extreme weather events such as this one. Nepal-based research institute International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) stated that unplanned development coupled with shifting weather patterns have increasingly left Nepal vulnerable, DTE reported. Extensive unplanned construction on floodplains has led to poor drainage and increased flood risks in large parts of Kathmandu. Experts suggest that comprehensive planning and increased investment in climate-resilient infrastructure is required urgently to prevent more losses from extreme weather events.

Another aspect of responding to climate change is the need for increasing global drought resilience. The Drought Resilience+10 conference held in Geneva called for a new global mechanism to manage drought risks. With droughts becoming more frequent due to land degradation and climate change, the conference stressed systemic solutions. The need to prevent droughts rather than restrict action to emergency responses after droughts have already occurred was emphasized, DTE’s Shagun explained. Despite progress in developing national drought policies, the need for global cooperation and action was emphasized at the conference as well.

Closer home, CSE is hosting its first ‘Climate Week’ from October 15-18 2024 to explore challenges at the intersection of climate change and development from the perspective of the Global South.
