Dear readers,
Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by the Centre for Science and Environment’s Climate Change programme and Down to Earth.
Tropical forests are being threatened by climate change as two-thirds of key biodiversity areas are witnessing unprecedented temperature changes. New temperature regimes are affecting 72 per cent of key biodiversity areas in Africa, 59 per cent in Latin America and 49 per cent in Asia and Oceania. Tropical forests are crucial for ecosystems and sustain over a billion people worldwide. A recent study has suggested an unprecedented weakening of carbon sinks as land, trees and oceans barely absorbed any carbon dioxide over the past year. In 2023, carbon dioxide growth rate was 86 per cent above the previous year, hitting a record high since observations began in 1958. Models have suggested decreasing capacities of land and ocean sinks in the future, but the question of pace remains critical.
Last week, CSE’s first annual Climate Week concluded at the Anil Agarwal Environment Training Institute (AAETI), Rajasthan. The event explored the challenges and opportunities of climate change and development in the Global South. It was attended by India’s leading researchers, and experts who discussed issues around agriculture, energy transition, industry, transport and climate finance.
On Monday, 28th October, CSE will be hosting a pre-COP 29 online briefing to discuss the latest on the international climate finance target—the New Collective Quantified Goal., and other issues that will be discussed at COP 29. You can join CSE’s COP 29 team for a detailed briefing on climate finance, Article 6, mitigation and adaptation.
And last but not the least, Gobar Times, a Down to Earth magazine for the young and curious, has released its September edition on how advertisements are beginning to branch into environmental awareness.

Ratan Tata: homage from an environmentalist, 11 October 2024
|
|
As we mourn the passing of Ratan Tata, let’s also mourn the passing of the time when business leaders like him ruled our world; when values of frugality and simplicity in personal life were cherished; and when business was not only about private gain but also about securing public good
