Dear readers,
Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by the Centre for Science and Environment’s Climate Change programme and Down to Earth.
The United Nations Environment Programme has released the Emissions Gap Report 2024 as part of its annual analysis of climate action across the globe. The report highlights that the world is falling behind on its goal of limiting temperature rise, as 2023 witnessed a 1.3 per cent increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to 2022. Moreover, the emissions gap, or the gap between GHG emissions expected under current climate plans or Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and the emissions reduction needed to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, has remained the same as the previous year. For achieving the 1.5°C target, the gaps for 2030 and 2035 stand at 24 GtCO2e and 32 GtCO2e. Avantika Goswami, Programme Manager, Climate Change at CSE commented on the findings, “The world is moving on scaling up renewable energy and other low-carbon technologies, but not phasing out polluting activities fast enough. As a result, the stock of greenhouse gas emissions continues to grow and wreak havoc on the planet.”
With COP 29 set to be held between November 11-22 in Baku, Azerbaijan, CSE will host a pre-COP 29 online briefing today at 4 PM IST. CSE’s Climate Change team will speak about the critical point of discussion at the upcoming summit—the New Collective Quantified Goal on climate finance. The team will provide insights on the past year of climate negotiations and expectations for an ambitious climate finance target being agreed upon at the upcoming summit.
