Dear readers,

Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by the Centre for Science and Environment’s Climate Change programme and Down to Earth.

Last week, Donald Trump was re-elected as President of the United States of America for a second term. In the run-up to the elections, he vowed to cut back on climate action domestically and internationally — threatening to pull out of multilateral climate forums such as the Paris Agreement (again!) and even the UNFCCC. I wrote about what a second Trump presidency will mean for climate action.

This week marks the beginning of COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Follow CSE’s fact sheets, reports and updates at our COP 29 page here.

The main issues in contention over the next two weeks will be the New Collective Quantified Goal on climate finance (or NCQG), Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, climate mitigation and unilateral trade measures, among other issues.

A new article co-written by Avantika Goswami and Trishant Dev of CSE’s Climate Change team highlights the issue of unilateral trade measures, such as carbon border adjustment mechanisms (CBAM) and how they can slow down the pace of the climate transition in developing countries. The article advocates for COP 29 to address this issue through a dedicated discussion space.

The latest UNEP Adaptation Gap Report 2024 calls for increasing adaptation efforts by focusing on the commitment to provide climate finance at COP 29. This comes at a time when we are witnessing catastrophic impacts of climate-linked extreme weather events across the world. The report puts the actual adaptation financing needs for developing countries at US $387 billion per year till 2030.

Finally, CSE’s Renewable Energy team will be hosting a residential workshop on “Decentralised Renewable Energy-based Solutions for Equitable Development” between December 11-13, 2024 at the Anil Agarwal Environment Training Institute (AAETI) in Nimli, Rajasthan. The workshop will focus on the transformational role of Decentralised Renewable Energy technologies in weak grid areas, examine the financing and policy landscape of the sector, and discuss how DRE can drive skills development and employment in rural regions.
