Dear Readers,

With India approaching the end of the last quarter of FY 2023-24, there are a number of developments taking place in the renewable energy space. One of the bigger developments in the beginning of this year has been the announcement of the PM Surya ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which encourages the uptake of residential rooftop solar. This scheme has now been approved by the Union Cabinet with a total outlay of Rs 75,000 Crore.

Increased investment in the Green Hydrogen and Storage segments denotes that the Government is now focusing on renewable energy sources and storage options which were previously overshadowed by the solar, wind, and hydro sectors.

India’s Renewable Energy Capacity is expected to increase by 35 GW in this year. At this rate, India may achieve 40 percent renewable energy share in its energy mix by the year 2030, which is just 10 percent less than the 50 percent share in cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources stated in India’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions.

The introduction of new sources of energy and their uptake in the recent past is a sign of positive growth towards achieving India’s long-term energy goals. In order to reach the goal of Net-Zero by the year 2070, India may need to maintain a fast pace with regards to adoption of renewable energy sources other than Wind and Solar.
