Dear Readers,

This year marked significant strides toward the nation's ambitious goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. As of November 2024, India now boasts 158 GW of installed renewable capacity (ex-large hydro and nuclear based power). Currently, India stands 4th in RE installed capacity, 5th in Solar and 4th in Wind energy installed capacity. With clean energy accounting for nearly 33 percent of the total installed energy capacity.

Despite the commendable progress, the thermal based power with 243 GW of installed capacity retains dominance. Underscoring the challenge of scaling renewable energy to meet the country's rapidly growing energy consumption, projected to increase by nearly 2 and half times by 2030 as per the Economic Survey 2024.

Solar power has emerged as the linchpin of India's energy transition. Solar based power witnessed impressive growth from 4 GW to 97 GW between 2014 and 2024. Achieving India’s renewable energy targets will require investments of ₹30-32 lakh crore by 2030 and overcoming hurdles such as land conversion risks, transmission delays, and high capital costs.

Key solutions include de-risking investments, boosting domestic manufacturing through Productive-Linked Incentives, and paced implementation of regulations such as Green Open Access Rules and Renewable Purchase Obligations. With a focus on making clean energy economically viable and inclusive, India’s renewable energy transition is poised to deliver on its promise of addressing both climate change and energy poverty, ensuring a sustainable and equitable future for all.

In the last few months,CSE has been actively involved in clean energy research and advocacy, besides stakeholder capacity development and encouraging multilateral dialogues for de-carbonization. We hosted the National Dialogue on Renewable Energy to emphasize on an equitable green energy led energy transition. With more than 80 policy from across the country, representing research institutions, industry and key government policymakers. The dialogue deliberated on pathways to 500 GW RE by 2030 RE, implementation barriers in solar rooftop, challenges in scaling utility-scale RE, Opportunities in DRE for livelihoods etc.

This was followed by a workshop on DRE for livelihoods, with nearly 45 participants representing CSO’s, State nodal agencies, grassroots organizations. CSE also hosted the first edition of the Climate Week 2025, a weeklong discussion forum on food and land use, industrial decarbonization, clean mobility, and clean energy. With an aim to drive collective action for a climate-resilient future.
