Knowledge Dissemination

CSE as a CoE also functions as knowledge centre for Sustainable Water Management, wherein it collates and disseminate information related to urban water management through its website. CSE’s website has dedicated interactive online information on water management and in particular CoE activities like RWH, DWWT and water efficiency. Also, other CSE’s websites like India Environmental Portal, Down to Earth, rainwater harvesting widely cover issues related to the above activities on a regular basis.

Rain water harvesting

Water harvesting began with its in-depth research on India’s rich traditions in using rainwater for a sustainable, participatory and equitable management of water. CSE first focussed on pushing for policy reforms in the water sector to mainstream harvesting rainwater in both urban and rural areas.

CSE also undertook intensive and extensive awareness campaigns, capacity building workshops and prepared various informational materials.

Decentralised wastewater treatment

CSE works towards mainstreaming decentralised wastewater recycling and reuse through research, policy advocacy and training. The objective is to build a movement across India and in South Asia for on site wastewater management through networking and partnership with architects/planners, RWAs/institutions, local NGOs/CBOs, ULBs and parastatal agencies for implementation of model projects.

India Environment Portal

The India Environment Portal is initiated and managed by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and promoted by the National Knowledge Commission (NKC), Government of India. The India Environment Portal is our effort to put together a one-stop shop of all that you want to know about environment and development issues. Its politics is overt: to build open, networked and informed societies, who can use knowledge to make change. This portal is built on an open-source platform; proprietary information held by CSE has been made available and open; and government documents are carefully sourced and put out for public scrutiny.

Down to Earth

In May 1992, the Society for Environmental Communications started India’s only science and environment fortnightly, Down To Earth (DTE). Over the years the magazine has informed and inspired people about environmental threats facing India and the world -- a dimension underplayed in mainstream media.

DTE has become a reading habit in 400 out of about 500 districts of the country -- more than any other Indian newspaper or magazine.

DTE’s sphere of influence is not just limited to India. Numerous readers across the world rely on the magazine for a comprehensive view from the South on the most critical issues of human existence. The online version of DTE is an effort to reach more people and to use all the interactive elements that the new medium has to offer.
