International Conference on Parking Reforms for a Liveable City

Venue: Gulmohar Hall, India Habitat Centre, Lodi Road, New Delhi
Date: August 17, 2011 (9.30 am – 5 pm)

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is organising an international conference – Parking Reforms for a Liveable City in New Delhi on August 17, 2011.

The objective of this workshop is to review and discuss how parking policy that the city governments are framing as part of the transportation reforms can address mobility crisis in Indian cities. The current policy thrust however is significantly on expansion of expensive structured parking lots to meet the ever increasing parking demand. But there is very little policy clarity about leveraging of parking management and parking pricing for reducing traffic chaos, cutting dependence on cars, reclaiming public spaces, promoting multimodal integration, pedestrianisation and so on.

This event is a part of CSE’s initiative to promote good regulatory practices in mobile source pollution control policies in Indian cities. The conference will bring together experts, policy makers, and civil society groups from different cities of India. This forum will also include a select group of international experts to capture the global learning from parking strategies. Already the National Urban Transport Policy, and the reform based JNNURM programme along with the state level transportation and clean air action plans have created the policy opportunity for change. Parking policy is one of the key strategies in the transport reform agenda.
