Online Course on Design aspects of onsite sanitation systems for rural areas

Date: Feb. 2 - 10, 2022

CSE Rural Water and Waste team organized an advanced training program on Design aspects of Onsite Sanitation Systemsfor the rural areas. 211 participants fromUganda, Nigeria and Tanzania were nominated for the program by Ministry of Water and Environment, Uganda, Federal Ministry of Nigeria and Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MoHCDEC), Tanzania. The team had conducted Level 1 training prior to this where the participants were inducted on the basics of sanitation value chain. This training now intended to dive deeper in to design aspects of the Onsite Sanitation Systems. This is second training of its kinds conducted by the team.

The objective of the training was to introduce them to the design considerations of various onsite sanitation technologies and understand the common mistakes which are generally made while implementing the systems on ground. The training also had certain case studies from India. It shall enable them better to plan systems in their respective countries and plan towards better community management in rural areas.

It was a 9 day online training program from 2nd February- 10th February, 2022.

The lectures for each technologies were uploaded in a pre-recorded form detailing about each technology in detail and their design considerations. Participants were introduced to various standards available for design. The participants were given time to go through each technology one by one and assignments were given to help them understand the basic calculation of these OSS systems. Two live doubt clearing sessions were conducted where, the team discussed the modules in brief and cleared doubts from the participants by facilitating an interaction with other participants. Some participants also shared some of their field experience. They enjoyed the enjoyed and actively participated in the live sessions and loved the design aspects.

Erasto P. Kinemelo, EHP, RUCU, Tanzania

These e-learning courses are essential for converting theory into practice to improve societal health. The way this training was organized, i.e. provision of modules, recorded module sessions, case studies, quizzes and written assignments, exchange of ideas through WhatsApp group, discussion forum, etc. is appreciable. I would recommend it to others as it is a very good course as it touches sensitive areas of public health. I request CSE to arrange for more courses in future and conduct more assignments and facilitate a face to face training
