The School of Water and Waste at the Anil Agarwal Environment Training Institute, a wing of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), New Delhi, conducted an online short course on "Know Your Urban Aquifer (KYUA)" from November 5-9, 2024.

This program was designed for water experts, industry professionals, researchers, government officials, academicians, engineers, architects, planners, consultants, and students interested in water management. A total of 90 participants out of 132 registrations hailed from 24 Indian states and 2 international countries, bringing a rich diversity of knowledge, experience, and perspectives to the course.

The course introduced participants to the key concepts of urban aquifers, explaining their role in the water cycle and their importance in ensuring water security for cities. The course emphasized the need to view aquifers as crucial water sources in urban areas. A central focus was on sustainable management practices, including strategies for balancing groundwater extraction and replenishment to prevent over-exploitation and ensure long-term water availability.

The program included practical case studies from cities in India that successfully implemented urban aquifer management strategies. These examples helped participants apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations. The course also covered governance models and policies, highlighting the roles of local governments, water agencies, and communities in protecting these vital resources.
