Online Training on Dumpsite Remediation and Landfill Management

Most regions in the Global South are witnessing rapid urbanisation, population growth and evolving consumption patterns – leading to unprecedented surges in waste generation. For instance, Africa’s total waste output is projected to reach 269 million tonne a year by 2030, and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) would be accounting for a significant proportion of it. Waste disposal remains highly unregulated across the continent, with over 90 per cent of the waste being dumped in uncontrolled sites or landfills, often accompanied by open burning, leading to severe environmental pollution, public health risks, and climate change repercussions. The region is home to 19 of the world’s 50 largest dumpsites, further underscoring the urgent need for sustainable waste management practices.

Similarly, India is striving to tackle its growing waste problem. The flagship programme Swachh Bharat Mission (Clean India Mission) 2.0 envisions a “garbage-free” India by remediating legacy waste, developing waste processing, recovery, and recycling infrastructure, and diverting 80 per cent of municipal solid waste from landfills by 2026. However, these ambitious goals notwithstanding, the Swachh Survekshan (National Sanitation Survey) 2023 assessment reveals that India’s national waste processing average remains below 40 per cent, emphasising the critical need for effective implementation strategies including urgent attention to divert waste from reaching the landfill.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) invites applications for a global online training programme on Landfill Management and Dumpsite Remediation. The programme will explore successful models, policy frameworks and actionable strategies to help nations in the Global South revamp their waste management systems sustainably.
