Orientation Programme on Managing Urban Air Quality: Focus on Clean Vehicle Technology and Fuels

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is organising a three-day orientation programme at New Delhi from September 25 – 27, 2012 for policy makers from different cities of India and South Asia. The objective of this forum is to promote good regulatory practices in air quality management, clean vehicle technology, fuels and management of in-use fleet and mobility management. Managing urban air quality is turning out to be a serious governance challenge in cities. More than half of Indian cities are reeling under serious particulate pollution. Even smaller cities and towns are getting extremely polluted. Vehicles are a special challenge. Many cities have begun to implement clean air action plans and safety regulations for vehicles. Vehicular pollution control is one of the key strategies of these plans. This forum will facilitate interaction with a select group of experts and resource persons to capture the learning in the region as well as demonstrate change through field trips and aims to deepen the understanding of issues of challenges of air pollution and its sources, their relative contribution, mitigation strategies, air quality management and governance, challenges and solutions for clean and safe vehicle technology and fuels, management of in-use vehicle fleet and transit traffic in order to meet the combined objectives of public health, energy security, climate mitigation and road safety.
