Pan-Africa Workshop on Air quality management: Focus on clean vehicle technology and fuels

A joint initiative of Centre for Science and Environment, India and National Environment Management Authority, Kenya

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), a New Delhi, India based public interest research and advocacy organisation is organising a Pan-Africa Workshop on Air quality management: Focus on clean vehicle technology and fuels in collaboration with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), The Republic of Kenya on March 15, 2016 in Nairobi. This workshop represents our initiative to promote good regulatory practices, facilitate exchange of ideas and strengthen capacity in the region to address the emerging challenge of air quality management.

India/Asia and Africa are rapidly urbanising and motorising and facing pollution and congestion problems. Deteriorating air quality is a key concern for all cities. Air quality monitoring and management, clean vehicle technology and fuel roadmap and dis-incentivising importation of second hand vehicles along with sustainable transportation practices is the need of hour for African cities. Many cities in the region have initiated action and are developing action plans. The Africa Sustainable Transport Forum (ASTF) framework also mandates countries to take action in priority areas including vehicle emissions and energy efficiency. This include air quality monitoring, developing vehicle emission standards and suitable inspection and testing, vehicle import regulations at both regional and national levels based on either vehicle age, mileage or emissions, adoption of cleaner fuels especially low sulphur fuels at national level and undertake a country level fuel economy analysis and develop a national level policy to improve fuel economy. 

This initiative is to bring together regulators from regulatory bodies across Africa who are addressing issues of air quality monitoring and management, vehicular pollution control including emissions standards roadmap and fuel quality, vehicle import policies and mobility strategies to share experiences, good regulatory practices and learn from each other. 

Target group: Regulators from different countries of Africa region working in the field of air quality monitoring and management, vehicular pollution control including emissions standards roadmap and fuel quality, vehicle import policies and mobility strategies

Participation: Participation in the workshop is by invitation only. Concerned Ministries/departments/agencies in the African region are requested to send nominations to Priyanka Chandola at priyanka@cseindia.org or by fax at +91-11-29955879. CSE will support the travel-related expenses, meals and accommodation of the shortlisted participants.
