In In April 2024, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), in collaboration with Unnati - Organization for Development Education, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, successfully conducted a four-day technical training from 22nd to 25th April. The objective was to enhance the understanding and application of Shit Flow Diagrams (SFDs) as critical tools in advocacy and baseline studies for holistic Faecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM). The training was aimed at empowering officials from Unnati and engineers from Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across the divisions of Jodhpur, Pali, Jalore, Balotra, Barmer, and Jaisalmer.
The program was carefully structured to maximize participant engagement and knowledge retention. The first three days were dedicated to classroom sessions, covering the theoretical aspects of SFD development. Participants explored sanitation systems, learned to identify gaps in service delivery, and understood the role of SFDs in promoting evidence-based advocacy. On the final day, the focus shifted to fieldwork, with participants conducting surveys and observations in Balotra city to develop a practical SFD for the area.
The training culminated in the successful development of a comprehensive SFD for Balotra city, showcasing the participants' ability to identify on-ground challenges and apply their newly acquired knowledge. CSE provided technical review support, ensuring the robustness of the final report, which was later uploaded to the SuSanA SFD portal in June 2024.
The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with the training's interactive methodology and hands-on approach being highly appreciated. The training has equipped participants with the skills and confidence to develop SFDs for their respective towns, contributing to the broader effort of improving sanitation planning and service delivery in Rajasthan.
