Programme Officer for Climate Change Programme

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is a public interest research and advocacy organisation based in New Delhi. CSE does research and advocacy for the urgency of development that is both sustainable and equitable. 

About the Programme 

CSE has led the discourse in climate policy for over three decades advocating for equity, the principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities, and investing in resilient economies for the poor. CSE’s Climate Change Programme is committed to championing the study of the most pressing issues related to the climate crisis. Our presence at UNFCCC proceedings such as COP summits and Subsidiary Body meetings, public outreach and advocacy, media engagement and training programmes are designed to create multipliers in society for climate action. 

Duties and responsibilities 

We are looking for an individual who will be an integral member of the Climate Change team, reporting to the Programme Manager. The candidate will provide research support in a range of thematic areas such greenhouse gas mitigation, climate finance, fossil fuels, carbon markets, trade and climate linkages, and other themes relevant for climate policy at the multilateral and domestic levels. The candidate must be interested in policy analysis, and also in outreach methods such as writing, webinars, training programmes, and network-building. Publications are an essential aspect of our research-based advocacy, and the candidate is required to dive deep into critical and unbiased analysis on the varied dimensions of climate change. 

Qualification and Experience 

  • A Master’s degree in climate change, natural resource management, environmental science/law/economy, international relations, public policy, development studies, economics, or other relevant fields.
  • A minimum of 4-5 years of relevant working experience, including in-depth knowledge of climate change policies, programmes, and good practices.
  • Ideally experienced in the policy, writing and practice of international climate change negotiations specifically the UNFCCC. Familiarity with proceedings at multilateral bodies such as the WTO, World Bank, and IMF will be helpful.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills in Microsoft Excel or other platforms required.
  • Excellent demonstrated writing skills and fluency in English is required, coupled with an active interest in disseminating research via short articles or blogs.
  • Understanding of the climate needs of developing countries and the Global South is required.
  • Experience in reporting on organizational or program impacts considered an asset.
  • Experience working in an international organization will be considered an asset.
  • Substantial record of research and publications with an emphasis on environmental and climate change management and sustainable development, including non-scientific communications.
