Recharging Urban Waterbodies

Every Indian city is known for and by its waterbodies. A city’s water wisdom is determined by how many structures -- tanks, lakes, stepwells and channels for conveying rainwater – does it have. These ‘sponges’ have not only acted as groundwater recharge zones, but also provided drinking water, support

Today, almost every such waterbody is under threat. Rivers, a city’s lifelines, are polluted, forcing cities to reach farther away to fetch freshwater for their daily needs. Increasing, uncontrolled and unplanned urbanisation is driving urban waterbodies towards extinction. Today, cities have forgotten their water wealth and wisdom and face devastating floods.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is organising a workshop to understand the challenges faced by lakes and waterbodies in urban areas and discuss possible solutions. Practitioners and municipal authorities who can showcase successful case studies where urban waterbodies have been recharged and given a new lease of life, will be joining the workshop and sharing their experiences. The aim of the workshop would be to help build a roadmap that would enable cities to value their rainwater endowment and manage their water wealth.

Supported by the National Mission For Clean    Ganga (NMCG)
This workshop is a part of a CSE sub-programme aimed at building capacity of cities in the Ganga basin and making them water sensitive. Under this, a series of interactions – from webinars, workshops and trainings to field exposure visits, and knowledge conclaves – has been planned to engage with various state and municipal functionaries and other sector players. The sub-programme is supported by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). It is a part of the ongoing efforts by the NMCG for ensuring convergence of Namami Gange with other national missions like AMRUT 2.0, Smart Cities, SBM 2.0, HRIDAY, NULM, Atal Bhujal Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission and Jal Shakti Mission.
