On October 2 2019, the government of India clarified that plastic items would not be banned immediately. Instead, it has asked state urban departments and urban local bodies (ULBs) to shore up plastic waste management in states and cities respectively through heavy investment in source segregation and end-to-end waste management. States have been left free to introduce prohibitive action on single use plastics (SUPs) by identifying a clear list of products that need to be targeted.
