Despite the growth in renewable power, India continues to be heavily reliant on coal to meet its energy needs. This is unlikely to change in the near future. India’s coal power sector contributes nearly 50 per cent of India’s fuel-related CO2 emissions.

Beset with all kinds of problems, from poor quality coal to slow progress on technical and institutional reforms, India’s coal power sector is one of the most inefficient in the world. But there is immense scope of reducing the sector’s CO2 emissions footprints and, in turn, augment its climate change mitigation potential. In this report, we delve deeper into the possible interventions and the impact they can have.
