Repowering Wind Energy in Tamil Nadu

Harnessing the potential of wind energy for grid application is proving to be difficult due to its intermittent nature and the limited number of favourable sites. However, wind is being increasingly used to generate electricity, and its application is likely to increase in future.

India’s wind power sector has been exploring the possibility of repowering older wind farms: this can accelerate capacity addition. In August 2016, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) released its policy on wind repowering. However, a Right to Information (RTI) query addressed to the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), a government body entrusted with financing repowering projects, has revealed that not a single project has availed an additional interest rate rebate for wind repowering under the `Repowering of Wind Power Projects 2016’ between 2016 and 2020.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) invites you to a webinar to discuss the issues and concerns revolving around repowering, with specific reference to the state of Tamil Nadu, which has the highest potential for wind repowering among Indian states. The webinar is expected to discuss the evolving role of the wind energy sector in Tamil Nadu, potential of repowering in the state, identification of gaps in policies and state-wise policy interventions, development models for repowering, sites with high potential for repowering, reasons for low uptake of projects, MNRE’s draft policy on repowering released in August 2022 and what it means for developers, and the way ahead.
