Centralised sewered systems in a town or city typically involve extensive sewerage networks and large-scale treatment plants that handle significant volumes of wastewater. The reality, however, is that not all the wastewater (including discharges from septic tanks and grey and black water) produced by an urban centre is connected to a sewerage system and conveyed for treatment to an STP. A large volume of this wastewater ends up draining into nallas, streams, lakes and other waterbodies.
Under Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) 2.0, Interception and Diversion (I&D)-based wastewater management and treatment is being promoted as a complimentary mechanism for treating wastewater in nallas that are connected to an STP. This method is especially valuable in cities and towns where sewerage networks are either non-existent or inadequate. I&D systems, therefore, need to be integrated as a solution into the overall wastewater and septage management paradigm in Indian cities.
