Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), the New Delhi (India)-based think tank, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE), Republic of Uganda to support the country in managing its groundwater resources and sanitation in rural areas, where more than 70 per cent of the population resides. The government’s own data shows that by 2030, the country will face reduction in groundwater resources due to increase in demand, low natural recharge and climate change-induced rainfall variations.
CSE has been helping build capacity of the officials of the Ministry on groundwater recharge, safe sanitation practices and water conservation. To take the partnership forward, CSE is now helping the country to modify its strategies and policies on groundwater and safe sanitation. The MWE has constituted a working group to work closely with CSE and develop guidance notes on management of groundwater and sanitation in rural Uganda.
This Round Table will bring together regulators and policy makers from Uganda to discuss the need for the protection and improvement of the groundwater resources. The outcome of the discussions is going to play a critical role in shaping the policy landscape and upcoming rainwater harvesting legislation in the country.
