Towards Inclusive Urban Sanitation in Uttar Pradesh
The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) worked closely with the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), State Mission for Clean Ganga-Uttar Pradesh (SMCGUP), Department of Urban Development (DoUD), UP Jal Nigam (UPJN), Nagar Palika Parishad Chunar (NPPC), the contactor, local community and other stakeholders to design, develop and operationalize the 10 kilolitre per day (KLD) faecal sludge treatment plant (FSTP) in Chunar town.
This report presents the learnings from challenges faced during the construction of the FSTP, measures taken to overcome these challenges, and the way forward. It provides a valuable case study in the construction and operationalization of a sustainable FSTP and various aspects of implementing context-specific faecal sludge and septage management (FSSM) projects in small- and medium-sized cities of India.
