Current Reuse Practice
• A solar-powered plant with 55 kW capacity runs the pumps for 14 hours daily, providing power for water distribution. • The system serves 35 farmers, irrigating 373 acres with 3 million liters of water daily. • The total project cost, including the reservoir, pipelines, and solar plant, is Rs 18,628,623.54. • Any leftover treated water is released into a nearby canal, available to farmers for irrigation. |

Measures for Ensuring Sustainability of Wastewater Reuse Projects
• Water Use Association Committees (WUCs): WUCs will take over O&M after MICADA's initial period. Comprising a president, vice president, and secretary, WUCs ensure beneficiary representation and efficient water distribution, adjusting water supply schedules based on agricultural needs and circumstances. • Financial Sustainability via User Fees: User fees (₹10-50 per acre per irrigation cycle) will be collected by WUCs, ensuring funds for ongoing operation and maintenance. This self-sustaining model reduces dependency on external funding. • Addressing Breakdowns and Failures: MICADA will promptly address any breakdowns. A survey will identify issues, and WUCs will cover repair costs. Once paid, repairs are carried out by the department, restoring functionality quickly. |

Key Learnings | |||
• Sustainable Agricultural Practices: Kurukshetra' s three STPs reuse 5.75 MLD of treated water, benefiting 717 acres of land and 88 farmers, supporting agriculture and livelihoods. • State Policy & IWRAP: Haryana aims to increase treated wastewater reuse from 15% to 80% by 2030, with detailed plans under the Integrated Water Resources Action Plan (IWRAP) and Haryana Water Reuse Authority (HWRA). • MICADA's Role in Reuse Projects: MICADA is leading successful reuse projects in Kurukshetra with strategies for O&M, water supply schedules, and financial sustainability through user fees, though challenges like CPCB non-compliance and economic feasibility remain. |
