The soil strata in general comprises of clayey silt soils in the top layers followed by sandy silt to silty sands at depths in most of the sectors.
In northern parts the soil is sandy to sandy loam where as it is loamy to silt loam in southern parts. According to a study conducted by G C Kandpal et al, 2009, there is wide spread distribution of clay, sand, pebbly sand and pebble layers in the area. The lithologs of boreholes drilled at Chandigarh reveal that there are interlayered sequences of clay and sand in most of the boreholes.
