Solid Waste and Circular Economy Conclave for States of India’s Northeast

The eight northeastern states of India -- Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur,Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura -- collectively contribute only 1.93 per cent of the overall urban waste generationin India; more than 85 per cent of the waste they generate is collected. 

However, when it comes to processing, the picture becomes challenging. Sikkim tops waste processing in the region -- with a paltry 16.68 per cent of its total waste being processed! This means that the rest of the waste is finding its way to landfills, waterbodies and forests, creating a mammoth environmental challenge. 

Known for its geographical and cultural diversity, ecological richness, and biodiversity, India’s northeastern region faces challenges in waste management that impact biodiversity negatively. Factors contributing to solid waste mismanagement include geographical and cultural diversity, ecosystem sensitivity, unique waste composition, limited connectivity, climatic conditions, community involvement, economic considerations, and tourism-related difficulties in the supply chain. 

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), which supports the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in reinforcing the implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 through research, capacity building and advocacy, is organising a Conclave of representatives from northeastern states to understand the challenges the region faces and come up with a roadmap for short, medium and long term actions. Participants are expected from all the eight states. 

The Conclave will be livestreamed for the benefit of those who cannot attend it physically.
