In 1982, Centre for Science and Environment, under the guidance of FounderDirector Anil Agarwal, published The Citizens' First Report on the State of India's Environment. It was the first major study from the civil society of a developing country which argued that developing countries must ensure that environmental conservation goes hand in hand with economic development. Subsequent editions of the report continued to argue for sustainable and equitable development using exhaustive data and wellresearched facts.
The Citizens’ Reports were precursors to the annual State of India’s Environment (SOE) reports. From its first edition in 2014, SOE has now become the country's most trusted report on environment-related events and developments. Backed by four decades of research and publishing history, this annual publication by CSE and Down to Earth covers a wide range of contemporary environmental issues such as climate change, air pollution, biodiversity loss, decarbonisation, etc.
The 11th edition of SOE is set to be launched at the Anil Agarwal Dialogue 2024 -- CSE’s annual conclave for journalists writing and reporting on environment and development.
CSE’s Green Educators’ Network (GEN) invites its members to an exclusive session on the State of India’s Environment 2024. Richard Mahapatra, Managing Editor, Down To Earth, will give an exclusive sneak peek into the contents of the report before its formal launch. Network members are also welcome to nominate students to attend the session.
