Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), the New Delhi (India)-based think tank, has entered into a cooperation agreement with the National Environment Management Council (NEMC), United Republic of Tanzania to improve solid waste management systems in the country’s local government authorities. The aim has been to draw lessons from two key Indian programmes – the Swacch Bharat Mission (Clean India Mission) and the Swachh Survekshan (Cleanliness Survey); learnings from these programmes have influenced the policies and practices of member states in the Global Forum of Cities for Circular Economy (GFCCE). Many of the learnings are also featured in the Forum’s Common Agenda for Action for the Global South.
As part of this continuing partnership and initiative, NEMC and CSE will co-host a workshop on August 1, 2024 at Dar es Salaam to discuss the strategic direction that solid waste management in Tanzania should be taking. Officials from the President’s Office-Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), Vice President’s Office for Environment and Union Matters, local government authorities etc are going to attend. The outcome of the discussions is going to play a critical role in shaping the policy landscape and implementation arrangement to achieve a sustainable solid waste management ecosystem.
