Strengthening FSSM in Uttar Pradesh

PARTICIPATION BY INVITATION

Effective and efficient sanitation and wastewater management has become one of the key areas of focus in India, and an essential element of this is FSSM -- faecal sludge and septage management. FSSM helps safeguard public health and ensure environmental sustainability through management of faecal waste from households, institutions and industries. It has become crucial in standardising the practices related to collection, transportation, treatment and reuse/disposal of faecal sludge and septage.

While significant strides have been made in the technological aspects of FSS treatment, new challenges are emerging, particularly in the areas of operations and maintenance (O&M). These challenges pose questions about the sustainability of treatment processes and infrastructure. It has become evident that many stakeholders involved in FSSM have limited understanding of the O&M requirements for these treatment processes.

The Department of Urban Development of Uttar Pradesh, in collaboration with Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), is organising a training programme aimed at enhancing the understanding of O&M processes among stakeholders. The training is expected to equip the participants with the knowledge needed for:

  • Mastering common O&M tasks for FSTPs and co-treatment plants
  • Implementing key measures for sustainable O&M practices
  • Gaining a comprehensive understanding of state-developed O&M Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
  • Prioritising safety and precautions during O&M activities

The SOP for Operations and Maintenance of FSTPs and Co-Treatment Plants of Uttar Pradesh, developed by CSE, will be released on this occasion.
