The Sustainability Index Programme is supported by the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The project aims to develop a collective sustainability index that will indicate the initiatives of the company towards improving its environmental performance and minimising its adverse impact. Though this is a cross-sectoral rating, we will adopt a sectoral approach. This means that the selected industries will be rated based on a series of indicators that will be specific to that sector. On the basis of its performance, it will be assigned a sustainability index that will then be compared with other companies. The index will identify the most sustainable company in each sector as well as most progressive company in the country. We are hoping to make this exercise an annual event so that the companies can follow their own sustainable performance. The project aims to closely scrutinise the resource consumption, GHG emissions and corporate aspects of the companies. The GHG emission and energy profile of top 6 energy intensive sectors has already been prepared and will be released soon. Post the data collection phase, we are now in the process of compiling and analysing the information received from the companies. The findings are planned to be released by March 2010.
