Germany has made remarkable progress in deployment of renewable energy. This energy transformation or ‘Energiewende’ from fossil fuel to renewable energy is attributed to German policies with particular focus on feed-in tariffs. It has encouraged solar rooftop installations and as of Dec 2013, Germany had an installed capacity of 8.7 gigawatts (GW) of solar rooftop.

According to the census of 2011, more than 77 million households still use kerosene for lighting. In rural India, more than 44 per cent of the households lack basic access to electricity. Even those villages that have been provided with grid power receive less than 6 hours supply in most cases.
