Of the 762 cities that the state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) has, 60 are under the Central government’s Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme. To ensure water-secure urban spaces, the state government is trying to create infrastructure and septage management facilities and has undertaken projects on lake rejuvenation under this scheme.
Currently, UP has 59 faecal sludge and septage management (FSSM) projects – both FSTPs (faecal sludge treatment plants) and co-treatment plants. The state is also concentrating on groundwater management and rejuvenation of its lakes and ponds. The challenge now is to ensure that all these projects and actions are sustainable and are utilised optimally.
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), which has a had long-standing and successful association with the government of Uttar Pradesh and its various departments and agencies, is organising a workshop and high-level meeting in Lucknow to delve into the status and performance of the various projects, the gaps and challenges in lake rejuvenation, and prospects for reuse of treated water, among other things.
