Nascent policy action has begun in some small and big cities of India to move away from car centric development.
City governments are actively finding ways to reform and fund public transport systems, reform bus sector policies, apply more sophisticated information technology in the management of public transport, develop innovative micro finance schemes for non-motorised transport, and design walking infrastructure to make cities more people centric. Twin cities of Chinchwad and Pimpri and Surat have created dedicated public transport funds; Indore has reformed its bus system; Nanded is redesigning its walkways; Guwahati has innovated micro-finance and management schemes for non motorized cycle rickshaws and more. We present a snapshot of these policy interventions across Indian cities.
