The third handholding training on the “Preparation of City Sanitation Plan (CSP)- Part III” took place at Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI), Hyderabad, Telangana from 20-22 April, 2016.
The training is part of a three stage handholding process for the preparation of CSPs for Telangana, followed by a review workshop. The first training on Preparation of City Sanitation Plan Part-I click here was held from 18-20 February, 2015 followed by Part-II click here from 20-22 May, 2015.
Participants from 10 cities (Adilabad, Jagityal, Karimnagar, Khamman, Mahaboobnagar, Mancherial, Nalgonda, Siddipet, Sircilla andTandur) attended the training. The participants included health inspectors, municipal engineers, commissioners and accountants.
During the inaugural session, participants were welcomed by Mr. Dirk Walter (Project Director - SNUSP II, GIZ), Dr. Suresh Kumar Rohilla (Programme Director, Water Programme, Centre for Science and Environment). CSE-GIZ engagement was talked about to support the process of CSP. Mr. Walter highlighted how the CSP process is contributing towards the Swachh Bharat Mission and other programmes such as the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) programme launched by the Govt. of India.
The main aim of this training was to involve stakeholders and to devise a draft city sanitation plan for their respective cities. Dr. Rohilla encouraged and motivated the participants to complete preparation of CSPs and make the document live by implementing the CSPs in their cities as it is an integral part for mainstreaming citywide sanitation in the country. He introduced CSE team (Dr. Mahreen Matto, Deputy Programme Manager, Ms. Chhavi Sharda, Sr. Research Associate) & GIZ team (Ms. Sarah, Mr. Rahul Sharma and Ms. Soma Biswas) who were facilitating the training programme and ensured technical support in terms of preparation of Shit Flow Diagrams and implementation of Decentralised Wastewater Treatment systems.
During the training, participants discussed and worked on preparing an action plan indicating short, medium and long term goals. A roadmap was also discussed for participants to strengthen the existing draft CSP after the training along with next steps. There were also presentations by implementers of some good practices like Soil Biotechnology, DEWATs for Septage Management which further encouraged participants to understand the need for well thought out plans and solutions at decentralised scale also incorporated into the planning process for achieving city wide sanitation.

Training has helped in strengthening understanding of CSP and capacity to prepare CSP, we will prepare CSP document. It is advised that another meeting is convened in selected ULBs for understanding the action plan and goals in the presence of chairpersons, ward members, staff, print and electronic media to review the matter and why we need CSP.
