The transformation of faecal sludge into valuable bio-solids and the generation of treated water by faecal sludge treatment plants (FSTPs) play a vital role in promoting the circular economy concept. This process enables the recovery of resources from waste and contributes to reducing environmental impacts. The treated byproducts produced by FSTPs and sewage treatment plants (STPs) contain essential nutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and potassium (K), which are crucial for crop production worldwide.
To further explore the potential of environmental sanitation and resource recovery in global south countries, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), India, is organizing a workshop entitled "Treatment to Re-use: Addressing the full circle of challenges and opportunities of environmental sanitation in global south countries." This workshop aims to identify the current state, challenges, and priorities in achieving a circular economy approach to sanitation.
