Webinar 7: Mainstreaming SFD into practice in Africa

This event is now completed

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in collaboration with Water Research Commission (WRC) organised a Webinar on mainstreaming SFD into practice in Africa. There were 90 participants in the event and a distinguished panel, which discussed the journey of SFDs till date and the way forward.

An excreta flow diagram (also often described as shit flow diagram, SFD) is a tool to readily understand and communicate how excreta physically flows through a city or town. For more info on SFD and the SFD promotion initiative visit https://sfd.susana.org/

During the first two phases of the SFD promotion initiative, CSE was closely working with SFD PI partners to develop tools and methods for the production of SFDs and refinement based on feedback received from sector practitioners.

CSE has made a considerable contribution to support the production and review of good-quality SFDs as well as help train practitioners. As part of the SFD Phase 1 & 2, more than 100 SFDs (65 + in Ganga basin states & the rest for other cities in India) were prepared. A demonstrated impact is the uptake of the approach by local, regional and national organizations and governmental agencies – in particular in India, South Africa (WRC with CSE technical support launched a national campaign) and in state / cities in Africa and South Asia, where there is widespread use of SFDs for advocacy and as a tool to map progress across the sanitation value chain. The aim of phase 3 is to bridge the existing gap in availability of data for monitoring safely managed sanitation (SDG 6.2) and for improved planning to achieve citywide sanitation. CSE’s on-the ground expertise will be complementary to the analytic focus of University of Leeds SFD Phase 3 engagement. This phase will focus on advancing the following key outcomes over a two-year period.

To promote the use of SFDs in South Asia and Africa help desks are envisaged at three countries - India, Bangladesh and South Africa. While WaterAid Bangladesh and Water Research Commission, South Africa will act as core partners to upscale use of SFDs in South Asia and Africa respectively, CSE is looking for more partners as multipliers in this phase of the initiative. The phase 3 has already been launched in Bangladesh, for more information visit https://www.cseindia.org/sfd-phase-iii-south-asialaunch-event-9942

With this webinar, SFD phase -III has been launched in Africa as well, with WRC as the core partner.

Objectives:

  • To advocate use of SFDs in national/state developing regional database
  • To rapidly expand the SFD database by providing handholding support
  • To field test and pilot / implement the upgraded SFD tools

Target Audience:
Representatives from WRC & Partners, Consultants, Government, Academic Institutes - University of Cape Town, University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, Authors of SFD Reports

(Participation by invitation only)
