The association of CSE with Bangladesh was started in 2008, when Bangladesh Environmental Institutional Strengthening Project (BEISP) requested us to conduct a training programme on EIA for the officials of Ministry of Environment and Forests. The sectors covered in the EIA training programme were coal mining, pharmaceutical, pul and paper and coal based thermal power plants.
The BEISP is a Government of Canada funded project aimed at strengthening the capacity of the ministry officials. We are developing EIA guidelines on coal mining, pharmaceutical and textile industry for the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Bangladesh.
As part of the above training programme, officials were also invited to visit coal mines in Jharkand, India to understand the impacts of mining on the environment, safety issues and measures, technology adopted, mine reclamation procedure and social impacts. The team comprising of three senior level officials from the ministry visited Piparwar opencast coal mine (Coal India limited), Jamadoba underground mine at Jharia (Tata) and West Bokaro open cast mine (Tata). The officials from Coal India Ltd and Tata met the delegates and interacted with them on all issues to be taken into consideration while opening, operating and closing the mines.
