Reusing treated wastewater has immense potential in ameliorating the water crisis that regularly hits Indian cities every summer – Uttar Pradesh is no exception. In 2024, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) had conducted a study to understand wastewater reuse and how best to utilise it for managing India’s urban water crisis. Uttar Pradesh was one of the seven states that were covered in this study.CSE, the State Mission for Clean Ganga (SMCG) and other stakeholders are jointly organising a workshop in Lucknow to discuss the learnings from the study – the workshop aims to cover the policy and regulatory framework for treated wastewater reuse, implementation challenges, and possible roadmaps for scaling up reuse initiatives in the state.
A key highlight of the event would be the release of a CSE publication: Planning for reuse of treated wastewater at the state level: Guidance document for policymakers and practitioners. This is critical resource that outlines strategies for identifying priority areas and will help in strengthening reuse practices in Uttar Pradesh.
