CSE’s Green Rating Project (GRP) has for the first time carried out an independent, rigorous and transparent assessment of India’s iron and steel sector. The project was sponsored by Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), Government of India and the UNDP.The environmental ranking for 21 large steel plants is based on performance assessment of over 150 indicators ranging from design, efficiency of production process, pollution compliance, water, energy, safety to local community response. The results were synthesised and published in CSE's newly launched book, ‘Into the Furnace’.

To explain the findings of the environmental ranking for all stakeholders, a full-day technical workshop is being organized in Kolkata on Friday, August 31st, 2012. The workshop will give details on process wise performance of various plants and seek to have interaction with people from industry, designers, technical consultants, regulators, media and community on the steps required. There will be a regional release of the book followed by an expert panel discussion.
The honorable Minister-in-Charge, Dept. of Environment (Govt. of West Bengal), Dr. Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar has kindly consented to grace this event and release the book.
