To gain an understanding of all of the required aspects for the design, operation and maintenance of a comprehensive faecal sludge management system.
This is the Third e-learning course dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of this rapidly evolving field and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management and planning. It addresses the planning and organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge and its treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge.
In addition to providing fundamentals and an overview of technologies, the course deals with details of operational, institutional and financial aspects, and provides guidance on how to plan a city-level faecal sludge management plan with the involvement of all the stakeholders.
The theoretical background of the course is based on the book Faecal Sludge Management: System Approach for Implementation and Operation. Furthermore, the course incorporates a number of illustrative real-life case studies, a helpful toolbox such as SFD and an insight into the most recent technological innovations in the field.
The course is designed for professionals dealing with the planning, promoting, designing, operating or managing faecal sludge in urban, peri-urban, slum or rural areas in developing countries and beyond. Practioners (engineers/architects/planners/representatives of non-governmental organization and government officials); academicians; consultants; students pursuing courses in environment science/management/engineering; researchers can be benefited from the course.

The Global Faecal Sludge Management e-Learning Alliance is a platform to facilitate development and empower the dissemination of knowledge on faecal sludge management (FSM) through online education, so that the sanitation challenges can be embraced with deeper insight, advanced knowledge and greater confidence. It also provides an enabling environment with a vibrant community of professionals who have completed the essential element of the alliance - the e-learning course on Faecal Sludge Management.

COURSE DIRECTOR
Depending on the extent to which the learning objectives have been achieved, the participant can qualify for one of the three membership status and/or the associated certificate. The formal certificate will be issued by the course providing institution where the participant has carried out the course-related activities. The following memberships are available:

The final mark of the course (100%) is made up of the marks obtained in the course qizzes (best 4), assignment and the final examination. The course is successfully completed when the average final mark is higher than or at least equal to a 60%.
